AI is just another tool to master
Like the humble air fryer…
In capable, creative hands, generative AI is not a shortcut around the creative process. It is a powerful new way to explore it.
Generative AI has changed how quickly visual ideas can be imagined, tested and developed. It can take a rough thought and turn it into something tangible in seconds, opening up creative directions that might previously have taken days to explore.
But speed is not the same as creativity.
AI as a creative tool, not a creative substitute.
I use generative AI as I would any other creative medium: with curiosity, purpose and a healthy degree of scepticism.
It can support visual ideation, moodboarding, concept development, art direction, storyboarding and rapid experimentation. It lets creatives test unexpected combinations, push beyond familiar references, and make an idea visible before committing significant time or budget to production.
The value does not come from asking a tool to make something impressive. It comes from knowing what to ask, recognising what is worth pursuing and having the craft to refine the result.
This collection brings together experiments in generative AI art, AI image creation, creative technology and visual storytelling.
It is not intended as proof that AI can replace artists, photographers, illustrators or designers. It explores how generative technology can become part of a broader creative toolkit, guided by human imagination and applied with intent.
Creative direction still matters.
Generative AI has made image creation more accessible. That is exciting, but accessibility should not be mistaken for expertise.
Strong AI-generated art still depends on the same fundamentals as any other form of visual communication:
a clear idea
a defined audience
an understanding of brand and context
composition, colour and narrative
critical judgement
careful selection and refinement
transparency about how the work was created
Without those things, generative AI simply makes it possible to produce more forgettable content, faster. Used well, it can expand the creative process. Used without intention, it becomes noise.
