Background
The L12 is a coalition of community-focused housing associations working throughout London to tackle the capital’s housing crisis. Although its members have consistently made an impact behind the scenes, the group recognised the need for a clear, public-facing brand. This would enhance its visibility, unify its members, and strengthen its influence with policymakers and stakeholders as its profile continues to grow.
Strategy
Our objective was to create a brand that felt human, credible and rooted in the lived experiences of the communities The L12 serves. We developed a clear messaging framework centred on the idea of being closer to home - reflecting the coalition’s role as both housing providers and neighbours. This was supported by a visual identity and tone of voice designed to convey warmth, simplicity and trust, helping The L12 stand out within a crowded housing and policy landscape.
The impact
The new brand was launched successfully, providing The L12 with a clear and confident identity that unified its members and strengthened its presence in the housing sector. The refreshed positioning helped stakeholders engage with the coalition as a trusted voice working collectively to improve lives across London’s communities.e.
The brand model
To create a distinctive positioning for The L12, I led a brand strategy process that explored the organisation's purpose, operating model and point of difference within London's crowded housing landscape. Through stakeholder engagement and strategic analysis, I identified a key tension: while larger housing providers often dominate the conversation around housing policy, community-based associations are the organisations closest to residents and the realities they face every day.
This insight became the foundation of the proposition "Closer to Home." More than a geographical reference, the platform captured The L12's unique strength: twelve community-rooted housing associations working collectively to influence change while remaining deeply connected to the people and places they serve. The positioning reframed The L12 not simply as a housing group, but as an authentic voice for London communities, combining local understanding with collective influence.
From this strategic platform, I developed the brand vision, values and messaging framework, creating a clear narrative that united member organisations around a shared purpose while providing a compelling story for policymakers, partners and residents alike. The resulting proposition gave The L12 a distinctive and credible position in the sector, rooted in community, collaboration and meaningful impact.
